Owned and operated by former New Yorker, Bettina Fisher, Blazing Star Café brings a taste of Brooklyn, NY to Charleston, SC. After moving from Brooklyn to Charleston almost 10 years ago, Bettina couldn’t help but notice a lack of bagels and delis. With a background in food service and a passion for everything bagel related, she dreamt up Blazing Star Café, a perfect fusion of the nostalgic provisions of the delis she frequented back in New York combined with the hospitality of her new life in Charleston.

Up until the 1800s, Charleston was home to the largest Jewish population in the United States. Although Charleston is a city with such a rich Jewish history and a lasting Jewish and Eastern European community, bagels seem few and far between. Blazing Star is committed to being part of the change by bringing back old school baked goods and provisions that all but disappeared from the Lowcountry including bagels, babka, and bialys.

At Blazing Star Café, celebrating the people, Jewish traditions, and culture is important to us, just as much as creating an inviting and warm place to visit. We honor the flavors and techniques of our Eastern European ancestors, and in this time of conflict and struggle, Blazing Star Café will be donating profits from the sales of our piroshki to the Charleston Jewish Federation Ukraine Emergency Fund which directly supports Ukraine refugees and Jewish communities in this time of need.
